KOBE – Officials in Kobe said Friday the city will launch a free wireless Internet service for foreign tourists from the end of this month.

The service is aimed at improving services for tourists visiting the city while encouraging them to share their experiences instantly on social networking services.

From July 31, tourists will be able to get access codes that will be valid for seven days by showing their passports at information centers.

The codes will allow them access to more than 3,000 wireless hot spots within the prefectural capital of Hyogo, as well as more than 200,000 others nationwide.

Kobe’s network is set to be the largest of several recent Wi-Fi initiatives launched by towns, cities and prefectures, including Osaka and Naha, Okinawa.
